How do I get to Sesriem?

Sesriem is a small settlement in the Namib Desert, in the Hardap Region of Namibia, close to the southern end of the Naukluft Mountains. The town of Sesriem itself offers little more than a general dealer and a filling station en route to the Naukluft National Park. Sesriem is primarily known for its proximity to the famous Sossusvlei sand dunes. The best way to get to Sesriem will depend on your starting point.

Renting a car is a popular option for visitors in Namibia. You can drive to Sesriem from major cities such as Windhoek or Swakopmund (approximately 5 hours from either city). It is not feasible to do a day trip from Windhoek or Swakopmund; an overnight stay in the Sesriem area is necessary to visit and enjoy Sossusvlei. The drive offers beautiful landscapes, but be prepared for long stretches of remote roads and desert driving. You will also encounter gravel and bumpy roads, so be sure your vehicle is suitable. A high-clearance vehicle is suggested, but not necessary. If you are coming from the south, a higher clearance vehicle is even more recommended, though still not mandatory.

There are no public transportation options in Namibia, but you may find buses or shared taxis going to Sesriem from major towns. However, schedules can be irregular and the journey may take longer than by car.

Is Sossusvlei different than Sesriem?

Sesriem is the tiny village at the entrance to the Namib-Naukluft National Park and acts as the gateway to Sossusvlei. Sossusvlei is a popular tourist destination in the southern part of the Namib Desert. The world vlei is an Afrikaans word that means "marsh" and Sossusvlei is in a small valley between the dunes which sometimes gets snow! The name of the 'town' is Sesriem, also the name of the nearby canyon.

What is The Namib?

The Namib are deserts with a delicate ecosystem that is home to a surprising amount of life living around the very harsh environment.

The Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world and stretches 932 miles from the Orange River in the south into Angola in the north. There is a wide range of landscapes in the Namib, from gravel. to rocky mountains to huge dunes in varying colors of sand.

What is Sossusvlei?

Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan created by the Tsauchab River that flows through the Sesriem Canyon every 5 - 10 years. Even in very wet years it does not reach the Atlantic Ocean but drains away between the dunes of Sossusvlei.

How do I get around in Sesriem?

The road from the hotels in Sesriem to Sossusvlei itself is about 40 miles and the roads are paved for all but the last 3 miles. The speed limit is about 35 miles per hour, but most people average around 60 mph, including the park guide drivers. The last 3 miles are through soft sand so you will need an all-wheel-drive vehicle to get through it. Alternatively, you can park your car at the end of the paved road and either walk the last 3 miles or take one of the shuttles that regularly runs between the end of the paved road to Sossusvlei (for a fee). You can also walk one way and take the shuttle the other.

What is Sesriem Canyon?

Sesriem Canyon is a small canyon just south of the gas station. It's a great place to watch the sunset, and you can easily climb down into the canyon and walk along the dry riverbed.

Is there any place to eat in and around Sesriem?

Sesriem is small and mainly serves as a base for visitors exploring the surrounding natural attractions. There are a few accommodation options that offer dining facilities, some of these are fancy resort restaurants. The only other option is the small general store at the Sesriem gas station.

There is a bar at the Sesriem campground where most visitors hang out after a long day of hiking in the desert.

Is the Sesriem area and the desert safe to visit?

Always be aware of your surroundings and stay with your group, don't wander off and get lost in the desert. Also always remember to drink plenty of water. Plan on taking at least 1.5 liters of water with you. Big Daddy is approximately a 1 - 1.5 hour hike for moderately fit people, and then a roughly 2 minute run straight down, followed by a 20 minute walk back to the parking area. Take lots of sunscreen!

What is the weather like? When is the best time to visit?

The weather in Sesriem is characterized by a hot desert climate with very little rainfall throughout the year. The dry season is typically May to October, during these months days are typically warm to hot, with temperatures ranging from around 68°F to 87°F. This time of year is considered the best time to visit. The skies are generally clear, and rainfall is very rare during this time of year. Wildlife viewing is also great as animals gather around water sources, and the vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot them.

Wet season is between November to April with temperatures reaching highs in the mid 90's and higher. The wet season brings occasional thunderstorms and short bursts of heavy rainfall, particularly between January and March. Wildlife is more dispersed during the wet season and traveling can be more challenging due to muddy roads and the potential of flooding.

What is the language in Namibia?

The official language of Namibia is English, but German and Afrikaans are also widely spoken in Swakopmund due to its colonial history. Additionally, various indigenous languages such as Oshiwambo and Damara/Nama are spoken by local communities.
