TORSHAVN - GETTING AROUND

By Bus

There are two bus systems on the islands. Red busses drive only within the City of Tórshavn. These buses are free of charge. Then there are blue buses connecting villages to Tórshavn. It is in general quite difficult to use the bus system for travel. Getting from one village to another can take hours. All blue buses depart from the Tórshavn Bus Terminal by the harbor.

On Foot

The city center is quite compact and lies only a 5-minute walk away from the bus terminal. There are lots of exciting things to see and explore in this quaint Nordic capital city. Everything in Torshavn can be easily reached by foot. However, to get out to the museums or the shopping center you might want to take a city bus.

By Car

If you plan to get out of the city, exploring the Faroe Islands by car is a popular way of getting around. It's easy, flexible and you can go at your own pace. Most islands are connected by an excellent infrastructure of roads, bridges, and subsea tunnels.

All major highways are paved, but some roads, especially in the smaller villages, are still gravel roads. Make sure to navigate these roads with care, as loose gravel can make driving difficult. Many roads and tunnels leading to villages can be very narrow, so please choose a safe speed according to the conditions.

If you do have a car while visiting Torshavn parking can be a bit challenging. Parking spaces are difficult to come by in the town itself, often they're restricted to just a couple of hours each between 9am - 6pm. The best area to park is the free parking spaces near the harbor if you can manage to find a spot.

By Ferry

The public ferry SMYRIL to Suðuroy Island departs from the harbor in Tórshavn as well as the ferry TERNAN to Nólsoy Island. The departure location Farstøðin is located at the harbor near Tinganes, which is the oldest district in Tórshavn. Tinganes is where you will find the Prime Minister’s Office as well as government ministries.
