BURGUNDY - GETTING AROUND

By Car

Having your own car is a highly favored way to explore Burgundy. It gives you the freedom to explore the region at your own leisure, as there is so much to see and do. Many travelers book a rental car just for the opportunity to drive the storied Route des Grand Crus wine route, which runs from Dijon in the north to Santenay in the south. Keep in mind that locals tend to drive fast and somewhat aggressively, and make a lot of last-minute traffic maneuvers. Also worth noting, speed limits are posted in kilometers and gas prices (which are by liter) may be higher than you’re used to in the U.S. Also, be aware that many things are different when driving on French roads, including right-of-way and intersections rules.

By Bus

Traveling by bus is another way that Burgundy visitors can get around the region. Mobigo is a helpful website and app that can assist passengers in planning their journeys via the region's various bus networks. For instance, Divia serves the Dijon area, and TréMA operates in Mâcon.

By Taxi

Taxi service is available in Burgundy through various local companies, but keep in mind that ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft have not yet come into this market. Taxis will prove to be very expensive. If you don't plan to rent a car, relying on other forms of public transportation is your best bet.

By Bicycle

If you're touring the region in the spring, summer or fall, cycling can be a picturesque (and healthy) means of getting around. Le Tour de Bourgogne à vélo, a circuit of cycling routes, offers a handful of itineraries and nearly 500 miles of bike paths, which make it easy to just jump on a bike and go. Visitors can rent bikes at more than a dozen shops throughout the region.
