A great way to get a feel for Tuscany is to attend a local sagra (festival). During the summer there`s one taking place almost every weekend in one or another small town or village. Usually with a food theme, such as sagra dei funghi (mushroom festival) or sagra della zuppa (soup festival), these events are held at night and serve plenty to eat and drink. Ballroom dancing, like the fox trot and tango, and sometimes live music are also a part of the celebration.

Since these are local fairs, few people speak English. There are no phone numbers to call for information and they are advertised only by crude roadside signs. Attending a sagra is a unique opportunity to experience small-town Italian culture so keep your eyes open for one of these festivals.
