How do I get to Angers?

The region of Pays de la Loire as well as the rest of France has an amazing high speed train network and a couple of big airports. The city of Angers has its own airport but it only offers flights to London, Nice and Tunisia. The airports of Rennes (Rennes–Saint-Jacques Airport), Nantes (Nantes Atlantique Airport), and Tours (Tours Val de Loire Airport) are the biggest and closest to Angers. Of course there are also the airports of Paris as well. Angers is located 185-miles from Paris, 55-miles from Nantes and 68-miles from Tours and is connected to any one of these cities by autoroutes (car) and train (www.sncf.com). If you plan to travel by car, the A11 connects Angers to the French capital Paris and nearby Le Mans. Many of the motorways charge a toll which can vary from €2 up to €25.

What is Angers known for?

Is Angers a walkable city?

Yes, walking is a great way to experience the city and all the highlights of the Angers, which are all within close proximity to one another. The main pedestrian strip runs along rue St. Laud. There you will find many cafés, such as Bar du Centre, and bars.

How Do I get around Angers using public transportation?

Buses are available throughout Angers. The main bus terminal, Lorraine, is located on Boulevard Foch, north of Jardin du Mail. These provide frequent access to the town center from the train station. Tickets, which can be purchased on the buses for about €1.40 for a 1-hour unlimited ticket, or around €4 for a whole-day pass. Buy tickets from vending machines at train stations, or from some shops. Single tickets can be purchased on buses at slightly higher costs.

There is a one-line tramway ("Line A") that provides access throughout the town and will cross the river. It connects two suburbs of Angers, La Roseraie and Avrillé. The tickets are integrated with the bus system and cost the same. A second line from Beaucouzé, via the Atoll shopping center via the Campus Belle-Beille - Université Angers, is expected to open in 2022.

Can I call or hail a taxi?

Taxis cannot be hailed on the street, however there is a taxi point next to the train station. One of the main taxi companies is Allo Anjou.

Can I travel by bicycle in Angers and the outskirts of town?

Angers has dedicated bike routes all along the town. There are free bike rentals from Velocite office, but these are currently only for locals. Bike rentals are available in town.

What is the nightlife like?

Since Angers is a university town, there are several bars throughout the city. Head to place du Ralliement or rue St. Laud, where you’ll find most of the city bars, cafes and clubs. This is also where many locals, as well as international students can be found dancing the night away at the clubs or enjoying a drink at their favorite watering hole, most of which stay open until 3 to 4 am. Soft and Belero are a few notable bars that are popular among the university student population.

What is the food/drink like?

Angers is historically an important center for market gardening and winegrowing. However today, Angers is best known for many specialties and has a rich gastronomic culture featuring a broad range of wines and produce, along with artisan food makers and chefs who are passionate about promoting the local produce.

Angers has amazing restaurants, a lively nightlife and thriving café culture. There is something in Angers for every foodie’s desires- from Michelin starred restaurants to local bistros serving locally produced food. A visitor can truly spend their entire visit tasting the local delicacies that the Loire valley has to offer.

Some specialties worth trying: freshwater fish (pike-perch, eel or pike from the Loire), rillauds (pork belly pieces), pâté aux prunes (plum pie), Doyenné du Comice pears, the Crémet d’Anjou dessert, and the wines of Anjour-Saumur. Among Angers’ great historical icons, you’ll also find the famous brands of Cointreau and Giffard, which are still based in Angers today. When the weather is nice, nothing beats the atmosphere of sitting at a riverside cafe or restaurant for some freshly caught seafood by the water. Drinks/liqueurs: Angers is home to some excellent retro liqueurs such as Cointreau, Menthe-Pastille, Guignolet and Triple Sec. Many of these somewhat “outdated” flavors have made a comeback at some of the hippest bars in town thanks to excellent mixologists that have brought evocative names and new trends to these liquors.

Be sure to check out the distilleries of the area. Many that today, continue to produce the same secret recipes they have produced over the centuries. A few highlighted distilleries of the region, Cointreau, a subtle blend of sweet and bitter orange peel, and Menthe-Pastille, a clear and light peppermint liqueur. Both are famous all over the world.

What is the arts scene like in Angers?

Angers boasts a fantastic performing art and theatrical history. The Grand Theatre established initially in the 18th century and the more recent Theatre du Quai, both play host to the city’s numerous theatre companies while Le Chabada is a popular concert hall and is considered to be the center of Angevin culture where many bands and artists are discovered. There is also an impressive performing arts culture which includes a street performing festival- Accroche Coeurs and the Premier Plans which is dedicated to Europe’s first films. If you can, coordinate your visit during one of the festivals it is worth checking out.

What is the best time to visit Angers?

The best time to visit Angers is during the months of spring and summer (April through August) when the weather is warm and mild. January is typically the coldest month of the year with daytime temperatures averaging around 46°F.

I don`t speak French. Will many people speak English?
