How do I get to Honfleur?

There is no direct train service into Honfleur. From Paris, take one of the daily trains from Gare St-Lazare to Trouville-Deauville (about 25 Euros one-way). Fares are cheaper if booked in advance online. From there, Bus Verts du Calvados (www.busverts.fr) no. 20 makes the 25-minute ride to Honfleur; the one-way fare is about 3 Euros. The bus station is located just 2 blocks east of the tourist office.

The easiest way to get to Honfleur is by car. Driving from Paris is about a 2.5 hour drive time. If you arrive from the north, though, you will cross a beautiful bridge, La Normandie. This fantastic bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, connects Upper and Lower Normandy and crosses the estuary of the Seine. The Seine, is a beautiful river that flows through Paris and weaves its way through France, which empties into the English Channel at Honfleur.

I will have a car, where can I park in Honfleur?

The most central parking lot is the ‘Parking Bassin du Centre’ on the Quai de la Tour, which costs around 7 Euros for two hours. For something a bit cheaper, try the parking lot on the other side of the Bassin de l’Est on the Place de la Gare.

What is the best way to get around Honfleur/outside of town?

Honfleur is accessible by public transit even though there is no train station. Take the train to Le Havre. Just outside the train station is the bus depot where buses run to Honfleur. Check the schedule of the local area bus, the Bus Verts du Calvados. The bus trip to Honfleur from Le Havre takes about 30 minutes and costs around 5 euros. Tickets are available for purchase with the driver. These local buses run throughout Normandy, thus making picture-perfect Honfleur reachable from other locations in the area.

What is the best time to travel to Honfleur?

The best weather in Deauville is from June through September. These months bring warm and comfortable temperatures. However, the peak tourist season is from June through August, so accommodations will prove to be more expensive. In September tourism slows down and the weather is mild and lovely. The winter months are relatively quiet.

Because Honfleur is such a popular tourist destination, especially with French visitors, we recommend trying to visit in the offseason and during the week if at all possible.

What is Honfleur known for?

Honfleur is a small historic city located on the Cote Fleurie, or the Flowery Coast. This coastline includes two other must-visit destinations, Trouville-sur-Mer and Deaville. Honfleur is especially known for its old port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind, forming the école de Honfleur (Honfleur school) which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest wooden church in France.

Are boat tours available of the harbor?

Yes, guided boat tours are available and can be booked at the Old Honfleur Harbor. Tours offer great insight into the importance of Honfleur’s maritime history, historical highlights of the town itself, and takes you out to the estuary of the Seine. It is a great way to get a different perspective view of the city as well.

How can I explore the town in a short time?

Getting oriented on a one-day visit to a new city is sometimes best done by taking a tour. The Little Tourist tour leaves from the bus station and lasts 40 minutes. This is a great way to see the highlights of Honfleur with a tour guide that will share important information about the town.

What is the food like?

A visit to Honfleur is not complete without diving into her gastronomic seafood delights. The fishing boats and nets lining the quay remind the visitor of the importance of the sea to daily life in Honfleur.

Honfleur is known for its scallop fishing. Peak season is from October to May, where the boats sail toward England for their catch, working 70 to 80 hours a week. In the offseason, these same boats fish for sole and turbot. Mussels and oysters are plentiful. And thus there is a wide selection of fresh local seafood to savor in Honfleur. Savory crepes, called galettes, are also found on all the local menus. Don’t miss the local specialty that’s topped with Norman cream - yum!
