Overview

Mamaia, “The Pearl of the Romanian Seaside” is the largest and most expensive resort area on the Romanian Black Sea coastline, situated north of Constanta with a huge population during the summer months. Mamaia is the most popular resort in the country on a strip of land that measures 5 miles in length nestled between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol.

Beach season is the time to hit up the beautiful Mamaia Resort strip from mid-June to early September the average daily temperatures range between 77 and 86 F and the water is warm through mid-autumn. The beaches of Mamaia are packed with beachgoers and sun-seekers during the summer months.

Nightlife in Mamaia is filled with high adrenaline dance parties and impromptu beach parties with bustling bars, and thumping nightclubs offering parties all summer long. Mamaia offers some fantastic spots to spend the evening, lounge on the beach with a cocktail in hand, enjoy dinner along the waterfront and sip cocktails in luxury lounges.

Mamaia's position is fantastic as you can enjoy the sunrise over the sea first thing in the morning and indulge in a magical sunset over the lake in the evening. During certain summer nights, you can observe the moon rise over the sea which is a beautiful spectacle.

Things to see and do

There is more to Mamaia than beautiful beaches. Lake Siutghiol is full of minerals that do wonders for your skin and joints, mud bathing is a big attraction in the region and throughout Mamaia’s spas. Spend a day relaxing and unwind at one of the fabulous spas for a mud soak, massage, or facial to rejuvenate your mind and body.

The Black Seas boasts wonderful warm waters during the summer, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports. There is plenty of marine life to observe under the waves including fish, crabs, and jellyfish. The sea waters and the lake offer visitors endless water sports such as windsurfing, wakeboarding, and waterskiing.

Visit the funfair located at the edge of Mamaia resort where various restaurants, shops, and theme rides are on offer, an exciting entertainment spot for the entire family.

Aqua Magic is a themed water park at the south entrance of Mamaia resort, close to Telegondola station where visitors can spend the day enjoying various water rides. The water park has a capacity for 3,000 seats and features 14 modern water installations for adults and children, a water playground and Baby Pool dedicated to the children, and relax pool, jacuzzi, and lazy river are dedicated to adults. There are many exhilarating rides and slides including the Space Bowl, Super Crater, River Ride, Twister, and the Black Hole. There are shows and contests throughout the day along with music, lounge chairs, umbrellas, gardens, restaurants, and bars for a fabulous day out in a tropical paradise.

The Telegondola cable car of Mamaia resort was opened in 2004 and has become a symbol of the area providing passengers a sensational journey across Mamaia resort. The entire ride takes 8 minutes and swoops you 164 feet high over the resorts and beaches with views of the sea, the journey travels from between Perla Hotel and the Casino, moving in both directions.

The Danube Delta is located about an hour’s drive north from Mamaia, an incredible location to check out the native flora and fauna. The variety of birds and trees here is amazing, there are Danube river cruises offered along with other river excursions.

Ovid Island is situated on Lake Siutghiol, a small piece of and with stories of the Latin poet Ovidius Publius Naso who was exiled to Constanta and is said to have retired on the island writing his poetry. The island has been transformed into a beautiful leisure complex and can only be reached via boat from the casino area. Visitors can enjoy hiking on the island or stay at the resort and enjoy the beach, restaurant, and amenities on site.

Beaches

Mamaia is Romania’s most popular beach resort on the Black Sea, a favorite summer holiday destination among locals and tourists due to its soft golden sands, wide beaches, and warm waters of the sea. The five-mile beach at Mamaia is packed with beach loungers, straw umbrellas, beachfront restaurants, bars on the sand, and filled with people beginning in early June through to September. Beachgoers flock to Mamaia for its unbeatable weather during the summertime when the average daytime temperatures are between 77-86 F, perfect for soaking up the sun, getting a tan, walking along the sands, and cooling off in the sea.

Strolling along the promenade in Mamaia is a great way to soak up the atmosphere, stop into some of the shops and boutiques to pick up unique souvenirs and gifts to take home, sip on a refreshing beverage while people watching, dine at the many restaurants and cafes with seats in the shade looking out to the golden beach and tranquil blue seas.

Food and Nightlife

The traditional cuisine in Mamaia is mainly based on fresh fish and seafood with great products from around the region. The menus in Mamaia include plenty of fresh fish and seafood caught daily on the Red Sea, there are mollusks, and crustaceans including grilled seafood, mussels, squid rings, and shrimp. Some local authentic restaurants serve up delicious Romanian cuisine with tasty lamb dishes as well as pork and chicken dishes.

Many types of seafood dishes are available in Mamaia such as seafood pizza, seafood pasta, along with many roadside vendors selling delicious snacks including corn on the cob, popcorn, and candy floss. Mamaia restaurants are situated along the waterfront with charming outside dining options and views of the Black Sea.

Mamaia is well known for its vibrant nightlife, said to be the next St Tropez, or Ibiza of the east if you like to party! When the sun goes down things start heating up on the beaches of Mamaia. The resort town is packed with Nightclubs, international concerts, festivals, and has won the recognition of the International Club Festival in Monte Carlo with 150 clubs as participants, and called the most fashionable entertainment in the world.

Visitors will find plenty of nightlife opportunities in Mamaia, with many of Bucharest clubs moving to Mamaia during the summertime. Bamboo Mamaia is a large seafront complex that features an outdoor beach club, a spectacular swimming pool, and Italian restaurants, and a massive nightclub. The ultimate landmark for large parties, celebrations, and a party playground for jet setters, celebrities, VIPs, guests, and visitors.

Festivals

Romania is a popular rising star in the European Music Festival scene, with plenty of great locations and some of the best festivals offered in locations such as Mamaia.

Sunwaves is an EDM festival featuring minimal, techno, and house music starting on Thursday and ending the following Tuesday for 5 days of non-stop sounds from six stages and world-famous DJs and producers. Mamaia is the host of this vibrant festival held twice a year, May signaling the beginning of summer and August to celebrate the end of summer.

Neversea Festival is another immense music festival that spans EDM, electronica, pop, and urban sounds blasting from the stage right on the beach. Neversea was the largest music festival ever to be held on a beach in Romania. Three days and nights of tunes to rock out to, along with food, drinks, photo ops, fun in the sun.
