How do I get to Constanta?

The main airport in Constanta is the Mihail Kogalniceanu International Airport located around 15 miles north of the city center.

If you have not booked a private transfer through us then you have a few options to reach the city from the airport including car rental, buses, and taxis.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

The airport is connected to the city by a special bus that operates twice a day, the bus stops by the Central Station (Gara CFR). There is another local bus service operated by Transevren to the Constanta Train Station that operates every hour from the airport. The bus stop is located next to the parking lot. Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals hall. There are several car rental companies available at the airport including Autonom and Hermann.

How to reach Constanta by boat?

The Port of Constanta is one of the largest commercial ports on the Black Sea and the 4th largest in Europe. The port is a terminus for cruise ships and private boats via the Bosphorus Strait or the Danube River.

How do I reach Constant by train?

Constanta Railway Station is the largest station in the city and on the Romanian Black Sea coast. Located less than a mile from the town center. There are taxis outside the station, and buses #40, and 43 go to the town center. The station is served by several buses and minibus lines.

There are five daily trains to/from Bucharest during the offseason and more trains in the summer. The journey takes between 2.5-3 hours and a second class ticket will cost around RON 61.60.

How do I get from the bus station to my hotel?

The main bus station in Constanta is located near the main railway station. There are several buses daily that connect the city to the rest of the country, Bucharest buses leave Constanta every 45 minutes and the journey takes around 3.5 hours starting at 6:00 am. Tickets cost around RON 30 and can be bought from the driver.

How do I get around the city using public transportation?

The public transportation system in Constanta consists of buses, trams, and trolleybuses which connect the city and the outskirts along with major tourist attractions. Tickets are interchangeable for all three forms of transport and cost around 1-5 lei and can be purchased from the RATC kiosks.

There are route maps available at the yellow ticket kiosks at the bus, tram, and trolley bus stops. Bus no. 5-40 runs from the railway station at the beginning of the Mamaia strip and is the best bus route to see the sights of the city.

There is a double-decker sightseeing hop-on, hop-off bus offered in the summer, they offer stops at major attractions and access to and from the resort area of Mamaia.

Should I rent a car in Constanta?

Renting a car when visiting Constanta is a great idea and allows you to access nearby attractions and cities. The popular A2 highway is the route from Constanta to Bucharest, a newer highway in great condition, a rapid road link between the two cities.

How do I call/hail a taxi?

Taxis are plentiful in the city, a legal taxi will be yellow and shows the fees written with green or black characters on the driver’s door. Taxis run on meters and can be found outside the stations, major tourist attractions, hotels, and called and ordered over the phone by your hotel.

A Maxi taxi is another option in the city, a minivan that follows a specific route. When you board the maxi taxi, you pay for a ticket and tell the driver where you want to get off.

Is Constanta a walking city?

Constanta is a very walkable city and the entire city can be covered on foot in just a few hours. There are many picturesque destinations to take a pleasant walk in Constanta including the historical peninsula, the sea coast, the Tomis marina, and many of the beautiful verdant parks.

Constanta’s old town is filled with historical buildings including the abandoned casinos from the old-time, there are many popular attractions found by the city boardwalk including Ovidiu’s Statue, the Church of St. Anthony, Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, St. Nicholas Church, and Kral Cami King’s Mosque.

Can I ride a bike in Constanta?

There are many scenic routes to take a bike ride in Constanta, riding through the verdant parks, down by the marina, and along the coastline is a pleasant experience. There is a free bicycle rental service sponsored by Raiffeisen Bank, located in Tabacarie Park which is offered from June to October. You can rent a bike with your ID or passport for 2 hours, with an option to extend for an additional 2 hours.

Is Constanta a dangerous city, is there anything I should be aware of?

Constanta is a very safe place to visit, with a low crime in the city and rarely directed towards foreigners. Petty theft, crimes, and certain scams do exist, but no different to any other major city. Practice safe street smarts when out exploring and keep your valuables close when in crowded areas. Pick Pockets are especially common on public transportation. Don’t wander into unlit areas at night, stick to the crowded streets and take a taxi from your destination back to your hotel to stay safe.

What are some popular areas for shopping?

There are several shopping opportunities to discover in Constanta including the downtown street of Stefan cel Mare where many shopping centers are located, including the Tomis Mall and the new, modern, large City Park Mall in Tabacarie park. The downtown streets also include many interesting antique shops where original souvenirs can be picked up. Constanta features a wonderful farmer’s market offering some of the best freshest produce from the region, there are also some delectable delicacies on offer including homemade cheeses, sausages, jams, and homemade wines.

What is the language spoken in Constanta?

The official language spoken in Constanta is Romanian, the closest currently spoken relative to ancient Latin. Many people will also be able to speak French, Spanish, and Italian, and the Roma people will speak the native Romany. Many people speak English especially in the service industry at hotels and restaurants, and many locals speak Italian. We recommend you get a good English-Romanian guidebook and learn the common phrases such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you, and numbers 1-10.

What is the best time to visit Constanta?

The city of Constanta is one of the warmest cities in Romania featuring a humid subtropical climate, with oceanic and semi-arid influences. There are four distinct seasons in Constanta with hot, humid summers from early June through September when average temperatures in the mid to high 70s with a cool ocean breeze. The autumn months also offer warm, sunny days and the first frosts occur on average in the middle of November. The winter months are milder in Constanta compared to other southern Romanian cities. The weather can be windy and unpleasant with mild temperatures in the ’40s and ’50s, winter storms occur when the sea becomes treacherous usually between December and March. Springtime arrives quite early in Constanta often in early April and in May when the weather along the coast can be quite cold.

What is the currency? Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The currency of Romania is the Romania Leu (RON or lei). You will need to exchange your currency for the Romanian Leu, which can be done upon arrival at the airport currency exchange desks or banks and specialized stores called Foreign Exchange Bureaus.

What is the food like?

The traditional cuisine in Constanta is mainly based on fresh fish and seafood with great produce from around the region. The major port city brings in all kinds of fresh fish daily as well as mollusks, and crustaceans caught in the Red Sea. Menu’s in the city include delicious fish soups, grilled seafood, mussels, squid rings, and shrimp. Many of the local authentic restaurants serve up delicious roast lamb and pork as well as chicken dishes. A Constanta salad is a delicious choice offered in many restaurants made with potatoes, green beans, celery, tomatoes, and salami. The dressing is made from meat broth, mustard, vinegar, onion, salt, and pepper. There are many food carts or stalls in the city selling kebabs and shawarma that are cheap and delicious served with salads, and french fries, great for a snack.

What is the nightlife like?

Constanta is a very popular party destination with colorful beach bars and waterfront restaurants to bustling bars and nightclubs. Tan Tan Beach is located directly on Mamaia beach where the party’s start early in the day with a bar to chill at and sip on cocktails, sand beds on the beach to stretch out and soak up the sand, sea and sun. Acola Bar in Vama Veche is a vibrantly decorated bar playing some old school rock and pop with a slight hippy scene. Cafe Del Mar in Mamaia features mainstream pop music and a big party daily. Mindfluid Breeze is a lounge bar above Modern Beach serving delicious drinks with music and a great relaxing atmosphere.
