Overview

The quaint resort town of Neum is the only coastal resort town in the country of Bosnian and Herzegovina nestled on the Adriatic coast with beaches, and charming resorts, and hotels overlooking the water.

The seaside resort town enjoys long, hot Mediterranean summers, which make it a busy location during the summertime. Families flock here from all over Bosnia and the rest of the world to enjoy the sunshine-filled days, beautiful beaches, and sparkling warm waters of the Adriatic Sea. Neum is the only stretch of coastline in the country giving locals and tourists access to the sea.

The town is backed by steep hills that lead visitors to some exciting and exhilarating hiking opportunities. The inland area behind Neum is rich in archaeological history with beautiful untouched wilderness covered with centuries-old olive groves.

The territory of Neum separates Dubrovnik from the rest of Croatia and is popular for day trips from many of the surrounding cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Croatia. It is a much cheaper vacation option than Croatia with accommodation in town being 20% or lower than that in Croatia.

Neum sits in a protected bay and is sheltered from the winds by surrounding hills, it is a little slice of heaven in Herzegovina and developed as a tourist town in the late 60s after the Adriatic Highway was built. The Adriatic coast is simply gorgeous with sparkling blue waters and Neum offers a small piece of paradise for a great summer vacation. The Neum corridor has the shortest coastline of any other nation on earth after Monaco, even tiny islands like Nauru and Tuvalu have more beachfront than Bosnia.

Things to see and do

Neum is the ideal holiday destination with beaches for sunbathing, turquoise waters for swimming and water sports, and unique sights to see in the historical south Adriatic town. The town is envied by many in the summertime with its warm Mediterranean climate and wonderful warm (89 degrees) waters that create the perfect summer holiday escape.

Neum allows visitors to connect with surrounding cities as well as countries. It is the only exit of Bosnian and Herzegovina to the Adriatic Sea, with Dubrovnik situated only 40 miles away, Metkovic and Ploce are only 19 miles away, and Mostar and Medugorje are 44 miles away, allowing visitors the opportunity for many exciting day trips from town.

Neum features some fascinating, hidden karst caves worth exploring along with prehistoric settlements where visitors can uncover numerous interesting details and remnants of the distant past.

The town of Neum is dotted with hotels, apartments, great restaurants, charming cafes, various sports and water activities, and numerous annual events that are well worth checking out. Neum’s summers are filled with various cultural and entertainment events that last all season with folklore evenings, ethnic festivals, gallery exhibitions, and literary evenings there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The hinterlands of Neum are fantastic locations for recreational activities such as hiking, and mountain biking as well as bird watching, and wonderful day trips to the sprawling vineyards and olive groves.

Festivals and Events

Dubrovnik Summer Festival has held annually from mid-july to the middle of August, one of the greatest cultural events of Croatia. The festival features classical music, dance, theater, and folklore with thousands of attendees from all over, easily reachable from Neum.

Etnofest Neum is a traditional Croatian music festival held annually in the middle of August during the days of the Municipality.

Shopping

There are a few shopping opportunities to be found in the tiny coastal town of Neum, many can be found in the Old Town area with authentic local shops and some small markets available where unique souvenirs can be purchased. The prices in Neum are much lower than in Croatia.

Food and Nighlife

The town of Neum enjoys a position on the Adriatic sea with many of the charming seaside towns’ menus consisting of freshly caught fish and seafood options. The restaurants in Neum can be found nestled along with the coastline, many offering wonderful views of the beaches, and waters with outdoor terrace seating. Visitors can expect to dine on delicious Bosnian dishes along with Mediterranean influenced menu items. There are all kinds of fish to enjoy cooked in white wine garlic sauces, giant prawns, mussels, and accompanied with great wine and local beers. Traditional Bosnian cevapcici, Burek, and Baklava can be enjoyed around town. There are local authentic restaurants, seafood restaurants, and many Italian options found in town.

The small coastal town of Neum is not a happening nightlife destination. There are many outdoor terraces at restaurants or bars that offer a romantic atmosphere in the evening, but there are no clubs or parties in town. Cafes and ice cream shops are abundant in town and it is mostly a family-oriented town. There is one venue located north of Hotel Sunce that plays house music.
