Bayeux is a historically significant city, famous the world over for the Bayeux Tapestry, an 11th century linen hanging, embroidered with various colored wools. Similar to a picture book, it shows through successive images the Norman Conquest by William the Conqueror, and is displayed in a museum in the town center. The beautiful skilled needlework and numerous details makes the tapestry a true work of art. The town's medieval center features cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and the towering, Norman-Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame. Located only six miles from the Channel coast, Bayeux also offers excursions to the WWII Landing Beaches of Normandy as well as nearby chateaux and abbeys.
