Auschwitz Birkenau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, stands as a somber reminder of the Holocausts' horrors. Located in Poland, it comprises two main camps, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. These camps were central to the Nazi regime's "Final Solution," where millions of innocent lives were systematically exterminated between 1940 and 1945. Auschwitz I served as an administrative center, while Birkenau functioned as an extermination camp with gas chambers and crematoria. The site preserves barracks, ruins, and artifacts that bear witness to the suffering and death that occurred within its barbed-wire fences.
