SARONIC ISLANDS

The Saronic Islands, which include Hydra, Poros, and Aegina, are the islands closest to Athens. This group of islands is in a small, relatively sheltered gulf between Attica and the Peloponnese. There are about twenty islands and islets in the Saronic Gulf, of which only six are inhabited. These islands are best known for their rich history, wealthy merchants and captains, neoclassical architecture, and cosmopolitan character.
