Major Cities
The largest city in the Rhineland, Cologne (German: Köln) is a cultural capital and University City enriched with more than 2,000 years of history. If you love to lose yourself in a great museum there`s enough art and history to keep you in Cologne for days. You`ll also find a great mix of appealing neighborhoods, numerous pubs, friendly people, and major art and music festivals, and you may never want to leave.
The former capital of the West Germany, Bonn stands on the banks of the Rhine and embraces 2000 years of history. It is one of the larger cities in Germany known for its busy commercial life and its attractive setting, particularly on the riverside, with its beautiful view of the nearby Siebengebirge. Bonn is also where composer Beethoven was born and raised, a connection marked by a variety of attractions and events.
With a slew of classy fashion boutiques, plus bars and restaurants aplenty, Düsseldorf is a city that has it all - even its own beer! It might only be the seventh largest city in Germany, but Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, is certainly one of the country’s most happening destinations.
Koblenz is an ancient town, founded as a military post about 8 BC and occupied an excellent strategic position, as a triangle bordered by the confluence Rhine-Mosel and a line of strong forts on the surrounding hills. It is a gateway to the terraced vineyards and ruined castles of the Rhine Gorge.
Situated on the Rhine, Mainz was founded by the Romans 38 B.C. The 2,000 year heritage in this city is revealed by both Roman relics and the impressive baroque palaces and churches built by talented architects and sculptors in the 17th century. Mainz is known for its old town, with half-timbered houses and medieval market squares.
