East Anglia and Cambridge

Major Cities and Counties
The city of Cambridge is a unique community, a blend of cultural and social diversity, intellectual vitality and technological innovation. Cambridge is best known for the University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious universities in the English-speaking world. One of the most impressive buildings in Cambridge, King`s College Chapel, begun in 1446 by King Henry VI.
Norwich may not be one of the major cities of England today, but for hundreds of years it was its second-largest city, after London. It is the most complete version of a Medieval city that you will find left in the United Kingdom. Elm Hill and many other cobbled streets, including down by the Quay Side, showcase Tudor-era houses and businesses restored to their 16th-century glory. In the middle of town you will find the largest covered market in Europe. Norwich has a long intellectual and literary tradition as well, and in 2012 it was named a UNESCO City of Literature.
Cambridgeshire comprises much of Fenland, which was the site of some of the first settlements on the island of Britain, back in the Bronze Age. The town of Whittlesey is called Britain`s Pompeii, as it is home to perhaps the best-preserved Bronze Age-era structures still standing in the entire country. The cathedrals of Cambridgeshire are terrifically ornate and large, and are tourist attractions in and of themselves. The most notable cathedrals, all of which were former monasteries, can be found in Peterborough, in Cambridgeshire`s northwest, and in Fenland (called `the Fens` by locals) and the Isle of Ely in the east. Today the area is known for its technological innovation, and `Silicon Fen`, a cluster of Internet-related businesses and corporations, base their UK operations here.

Combine England With
WHY EAST ANGLIA?

The history of East Anglia is vivid and rich and you can see that when you get the chance to visit the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire. The oldest structures still standing in England, dating from the Bronze Age, are located in East Anglia. The region is named for the East Angles, who, along with the Danes who succeeded them, ruled this area for over 300 years before it became part of the Kingdom of England. You can see remnants of this time gone by in all corners of East Anglia, but in particular in Cambridgeshire. A number of beautifully large and ornate former monasteries-turned-grand cathedrals dot the county, from Peterborough in the northwest to Fenland and the Isle of Ely in the east. In the southern part of Cambridgeshire, you will find the county town, Cambridge, which is home to one of the most prestigious English-language universities in the world. Also of interest to the traveler are the county towns of Norfolk and Suffolk, respectively Norwich and Ipswich.
