Tatra Mountains

Major Cities

Zakopane, located at the base of the Tatra Mountains in Lesser Poland, is considered `the winter capital of Poland`, due to the numerous ski resorts in the vicinity. The main street, Krupowki Street, runs for three miles through the center of town, and is where many restaurants, bars, and shops are located. In the summertime, visitors to Zakopane can take advantage of the numerous hiking trails that stretch deep into the High Tatras. There are great views of the city from the top of Gubalowka Hill, about 3,000 feet above the town; the best way to get to the top is by funicular. The unique Goral ethnic group thrives in Zakopane and you will have chances to experience their food and culture during your stay. Keep an eye out for a Goral crafts market each week in the summer.
TATRA MOUNTAINS

The Tatra Mountains, specifically the High Tatras, comprise the border region between the countries of Poland and Slovakia, and is a popular tourist destination, particularly in the winter, when it is visited by millions of people. Many go to Tatra National Park, recognized by UNESCO as a transboundary biosphere reserve, which comprises 81 square miles of the High Tatras in both countries. Rysy, Poland`s highest point, is located in this park. Gerlachovsky stit, Slovakia`s highest point, is one of the other peaks that make up the High Tatras. The largest lake in the Tatras sits at 4,500 feet above sea level; it is located on the Polish side and is called Morskie Oko (`Eye of the Sea`). The mountain range is a great place to ski and participate in winter sports, and the Polish side is considered to be where some of the best ski resorts in Central Europe are clustered. In the summertime, the High Tatras` hiking trails come highly-recommended to visitors. Much of the social scene in the Tatras is centered on Zakopane, in Lesser Poland, in particular its buzzing main street, Krupowki Street.
