Lombardy
Cities in Lombardy

Milan is Italy's window on Europe, its most sophisticated and high-tech metropolis. La Scala, its landmark, is one of Europe's most prestigious opera houses. Milan is one of Europe's top shopping cities, with an incredible concentration of sophisticated, high style boutiques - and that's only fitting because Milan is the dynamo of the Italian fashion industry.

Italy`s most beloved lake, is home to international celebrities and all kinds of beautiful people. Lake Como towns worth noting are Como, Bellagio, Tremezzo, Menaggio, and Varenna.

Lake Maggiore is Italy's second-largest lake, and one of its most popular. It's a long, thin lake on the south side of the Alps, shared by Italy’s Piedmont and Lombardy regions as well as Switzerland’s Ticino canton. It's noted for its picturesque surroundings of verdant mountains. Some of the towns along the shores of Lake Maggiore which are worth noting are Stresa, Cannobio, Arona, Verbania, and Baveno.

Lake Garda, Italy's largest and easternmost lake, is surrounded by rolling green hills and gardens, vineyards, lemon trees and olive groves. Picturesque villages, medieval castles, and lakeside promenades dot the shoreline. The scenery is enormously diverse, from the fjord-like north, where the Brenta Dolomites drop dramatically into the water, to the gentle hills of vineyards and olive groves, and to the sea-like southern basin, fringed by beaches.

Bellagio is a charming and picturesque town situated at the tip of the peninsula that divides Lake Como into its two southern arms. Gracing the shores of Lake Como, it's renowned for its stunning natural beauty, historic architecture, and serene atmosphere; and the region itself is known for its delicious Italian cuisine, offering a range of dining options where visitors can savor traditional dishes and local specialties.

Bergamo is a lovely little town divided in two distinct parts, 'Città alta', a hilltop medieval town, surrounded by 17th century defensive walls, and 'Città bassa', the modern center. The main attractions of Bergamo Alta are the Piazza Vecchia with its Renaissance buildings such as the Biblioteca Civica, the Palazzo della Ragione, and the Piazza del Duomo.

Since the 16th century, Cremona has been known as a center of musical instrument manufacture, beginning with the violins of the Amati family, and later including the products of the Guarneri and Stradivari shops.

With a charming location on the meandering River Mincio, Mantua is one of Lombardy's finest cities, having reached its peak under the rule of the Gonzaga family. It's Renaissance glory can be seen in its monuments and art collections. The historic city center has small medieval streets, many piazzas, churches and palaces, the most renowned being the Palazzo Ducale with its many rooms, numerous courtyards and impressive frescoes.

Riva del Garda is the northernmost town on Lake Garda. It's a prosperous town with medieval towers, churches and palazzi from the Renaissance period. One of the most amazing sights in the area, Cascata Verone, is located just outside of town, while another fascinating place in this region is the Dolomites, a section of the Italian Alps, which offer amazing views from its various peaks.

WHY THE LOMBARDY REGION?

The Lombardy region, or Lombardia, in northern Italy, is one of the country's most diverse and culturally rich areas. Bordered by Switzerland, and the Italian regions of Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Veneto, it combines Alpine peaks with some of Italy's most stunning lakes, including Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, and Lake Garda. Its capital, Milan, is the nation's fashion and cultural hub, and the wealthiest city in Italy. Unlike more tourist-heavy regions, Lombardy remains refreshingly less crowded, offering visitors a chance to experience authentic Italian life while exploring breathtaking scenery and world-class destinations. Discover quaint towns and villages like Bellagio, Bergamo, Baveno, Cremona, Riva del Garda, Stresa, and Mantova to name a few.
