Liguria & The Italian Riviera
Cities in Liguria (Italian Riviera)

Nestled in the center of the Italian Riviera, Genoa, stretches for several miles from the hills to the coast. It lives up to its reputation as the cultural capital of Europe, a title won in 2004 due to its theaters, museums, restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, and Europe's largest aquarium. The historic center is said to be the largest medieval quarter in Europe, and features a wealth of churches, palaces, and museums. During the time of the Romans, it served as an important maritime center for the empire, and during the Renaissance, it was known as one of the richest cities of Renaissance Europe.

Five Lands (in Italian) offers five miles of rocky coast with five small villages (born in the 11th Century as fortresses) overlooking the sea, in the midst of two capes with hundreds of miles of beautiful paths.

One of the prettiest harbors in Italy, Portofino is known as the jewel of Liguria. Its multicolored houses and stunning seaside scenery give this tiny harbor town a picture-perfect setting. Luxury villas perch on the hills overlooking the marina where yachts and private boats bob on the water below, set against the vibrantly colored dwellings of fishermen. There are very few beaches and fewer hotels in the postcard-perfect Portofino. What there are, in abundance, are bars, boutiques, nightclubs, and fishing boats.

Santa Margherita Ligure was well known in the early 1900's as a fashionable retreat for the rich and glamorous. Today it is a peaceful, pretty town, better known for its food festivals and its lobsters that are caught daily by the local fishing boats. It has a palm-lined seaside promenade, where elegant hotels with Liberty facades overlook million-dollar yachts and bars, cafes, gelaterie and restaurants spread along the seafront.

Located just thirty miles from the French border, San Remo offers a wonderful slice of old-fashioned Riviera grandeur. It's high-rise free with luxury villas lined with palm trees, long expansive beaches with cabana filled beach clubs, and a large promenade along the Mediterranean. Beyond the manicured lawns and belle Epoque hotels is a hidden old town with a maze of twisting lanes and covered alleyways that cascade down the Ligurian hillside.

Rapallo lies sheltered from winds and currents in an inlet on the Golfo del Tigullio. There's a picturesque castle in the sea, a small harbor, and a fine seaside 'Lungomare Vittorio Veneto,' a traditional red-brick promenade lined with palm trees, skirting the semi-circular harbor. Along the promenade are art nouveau buildings, restaurants, bars, and hotels.
