Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), in west-central Poland, is known as the country's 'cradle', as it was the area of the country that saw the rise of the very first Polish royal house, the Piasts. The first capitals of the Polish kingdom were Gniezno, and later Greater Poland's largest city, Poznan. Poznan is one of the oldest major cities in Poland, having been founded over a millennium ago. It is the city where the very first Roman Catholic cathedral was built in Poland, in the year 968. The cathedral and a number of other historic buildings are located on Cathedral Island (Ostrow Tumski) in the middle of the Warta River. The Fara Collegiate Church is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the country.
