Debrecen

Debrecen is the largest city on the northern Great Hungarian Plain, and the second-largest city in Hungary after Budapest. Until the 19th century, it was the largest city in Hungary, and served as the capital of the country during the Revolution of 1848 and in the immediate aftermath. The Reformed Great Church was the site where Lajos Kossuth issued the proclamation of Hungarian independence. Debrecen is a regional hub of commerce, education, and culture, and is home to the University of Debrecen, the largest university in Hungary.
Szeged

Szeged is the largest city on the southern Great Hungarian Plain, and the third-largest city in Hungary. Located on the Tisza River, Szeged was believed to be the seat of power of Attila the Hun. It is home to the University of Szeged, the most prestigious Hungarian-language university, whose biological research center was funded in part by UNESCO. Sights in Szeged include Dömötör Tower, the oldest building still standing in town, dating from the 11th century; and the iconic Votive Cathedral of Our Lady of Hungary, one of the largest Catholic churches in the country. Szeged Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Hungary outside Budapest.

GREAT HUNGARIAN PLAIN

The Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld) covers a little more than half of the country and most of its eastern and southeastern portions. It sits south of the Carpathian Mountains, and north of the Dinaric Alps and the Sava River. Rolling hills meet flatlands in areas such as the Tisza River Valley. Szeged, located in the southern portion, is situated on the Tisza River and is home to such points of interest as the iconic Votive Cathedral of Our Lady of Hungary and the University of Szeged, the most prestigious university in Hungary. Debrecen, the principal city of the northern Plain, is the country's second-largest city, where many key historical moments occurred during the Revolution of 1848 and the quest for Hungarian independence. The largest grassland in Europe, the 288-square-mile Hortobágy National Park, is situated on the Plain; it is Hungary's oldest national park and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
