RHODES - BEACHES

The northwest coast of Rhodes is washed by the Aegean Sea waters while the southeast by the Mediterranean Sea. The Aegean coast is windier and is characterized by pebbly beaches and choppy waters. The Mediterranean coast is famous for its sandy and gently-shelving beaches. The Mediterranean Sea waters are quieter and cooler than those of the Aegean. Accordingly, the east coast of the island is more suitable for traditional beach holiday and its west coast attracts mainly windsurfers.

Limanaki Agios Pavlos Beach

The little bay of Agios Pavlos (Saint Paul) lies 30 miles south of Rhodes town and close to the ancient acropolis of Lindos. According to a local myth, the bay owes its name to the lovely white chapel standing on the beach which is dedicated to Saint Paul, who came here in 43 AD and preached Christianity. Golden sand and pebbles compose the beach where sun beds are available for rent. Rocks surround the beach which allow the possibility to dive into the clean turquoise waters.

Ladiko Beach

Ladiko is a small beach located on a beautiful bay 12 miles south of Rhodes Town and a mile from Faliraki village. Ladiko beach features a tiny picturesque cove. The seashore has fine clean sand, and some small rocks are scattered around as well as many beach facilities, such as umbrellas, sun beds, fresh water showers and delicious traditional taverns. Ladiko beach tends to get particularly crowded in summer. This cove usually presents a beautiful picture, with small boats sailing near the shore. Lush green vegetation surrounds the beach and creates nice scenery.

Kallithea Beach

The beach of Kallithea is famous for its hot medicinal springs which were built by the Italians but no longer function. It is found 5 miles south of Rhodes town and it is a truly magnificent place with palm and pine trees and beautiful renovated buildings with impressive mosaics (the springs) influenced by Arabic architecture. The emerald waters of the sea match perfectly with this idyllic scenery, adding one more touch of beauty to the whole picture. Kallithea is easily accessed from the main town of Rhodes.

Tsambika Beach

The long sandy beach of Tsambika is located 16 miles south of Rhodes town, under the imposing rock where the miraculous Monastery of Tsambika stands. Turquoise waters and golden sands create beautiful scenery, ideal to relax and enjoy the sun. Dozens of colorful beach facilities are available as well as Water sports for the most daring types. The wider region is very friendly and offers plenty of amenities, during night and day.

Afandou Beach

The extremely long and large beach of Afandou is located 12 miles south of Rhodes town. The village lies around the natural bay. The beach is made of sand and pebbles and offers many rental facilities. It is relatively crowded during the high season and most importantly it receives many windsurfing lovers. Its deep, clear sparkling waters are ideal for swimming and remain quite fresh even under the hot sun. Some fine taverns can be found near the beach and, in the village, visitors will find even more taverns and all kinds of accommodations.

Ixia Beach

Ixia is a nice cosmopolitan resort located 3 miles south of Rhodes town and is considered one of the most beautiful places in the island. It is a popular windsurfing destination. Over the years, the area has developed into an international meeting place that attracts many visitors. Ixia village has delightful restaurants and traditional taverns to choose and plenty of bars to enjoy a drink.

Prassonisi Beach

The long and large sandy beach of Prassonisi lies 53 miles south of Rhodes Town and 25 miles southwest of Lindos village. Prassonissi is known as a windsurfing paradise for many lovers of this sport. Particularly during the months of July and August, when the north winds called meltemi are blowing, the beach is crowded and every day you will enjoy skillful windsurfers. The beach consists of two sandy coves, both of them end in a rocky island that can be either reached on foot or by swimming, depending on the level of the waters. Windsurfing equipments are available for rent, even if most surfers bring their own material. Taverns and rooms for rent can be found close to the beach. The landscape is idyllic and the waters amazingly crystalline.
