MOJACAR - BEACHES


With over 10 miles of fine, golden sand stretching along the Costa Almería, the virtually untouched beaches of Mojácar are the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the Mediterranean sea.

Access to/from the beach
It is a reasonably short walk from the coast to the pueblo, Lower pueblo road and houses however it is all uphill, a regular bus service runs from the commercial center where taxis are also available. Parking in the village is limited, especially in high season, the main car park can be reached along the single entry road approximately 300m past the turning for Plaza Nueva.
Playa de la Marina de la Torre
The first beach to greet you as you enter the municipality of Mojácar, Playa de la Marina de la Torre finds itself in front of the old Palace of the Marina. Today, the palace has been restored to its former glory and now houses a luxury hotel complex and an 18-hole golf course. The beach has been awarded an E.U. Blue Flag award for its excellent facilities and high standards of cleanliness.

Playa del Cantal
This is one of the most visited beaches in Mojácar, equipped with good medical services and excellent leisure facilities. Easy access, including for wheelchairs, the beach is also equipped with changing rooms and showers. There is a regular bus that serves the beach - línea ALP-116 (Carboneras-San Juan de los Terrenos) - and parking is available.

Playa de la Cueva del Lobo
This beach is named after one of first buildings in the area from the 1960s, which was owned by a famous pianist. Perfect for relaxation, the beach has easy access and good leisure facilities.

Playa del Lance Nuevo
Perfect for the water sports lover, this sand and pebble beach gets its name from the old fishing port that used to be based here. It is visited by many tourists thanks to its easy access and array of services available.

Playa de la Venta del Bancal
The first beach as the coastline gives way to the more urban areas of Mojácar, it is bordered by a Paseo Marítimo (seaside walk) and protected by an artificial breakwater. The excellent facilities and high standards of cleanliness have earned it an E.U. Blue Flag.

Playa de Macenas
Next to this beach we find the old Torre de Macenas, an old tower built during the reign of Carlos III. From here begins the road towards the protected beach spaces of Mojácar.

Playa de las Ventanicas
This sandy beach finds itself situated between Playa la Cueva del Lobo and the last beach on the urban strip of coastline. It is one of the biggest in Mojácar and provides all types of services for leisure and relaxation, with easy access and connections. Its high standards of cleanliness and excellent facilities have earned it an E.U. Blue Flag award.

Playas de la Rumina y Palmeral
Located in a residential area next to the river estuary, these beaches are calm and peaceful.

Playa Piedra Villazar
Located near the crossroads which link Mojácar`s coast to the village, the beach takes its name from the interesting rock structure made from the distinctive Villazar stone, which is located on the sand. Easy access with changing rooms and other leisure facilities such as a playground and a beach bar. Its standards of cleanliness and good facilities have won the beach an E.U. Blue Flag award.

Protected Beaches:
These beaches are conserved in an almost entirely untouched state and are designated entirely to nature. It is asked that visitors respect its upkeep. There are no facilities at the beaches but they have a unique beauty.
An impressive shoreline of volcanic rock formations at the foot of the Sierra Cabrera, these beaches are in a protected zone, with no equipment and very limited services they remain loyal to their natural surroundings.
Visitors are requested to apply the highest level of respect towards the environment.

Playa Macenas
Located from the ALP-118 Mojacar to Carboneras road, an unspoiled and rural beach,its position is directly across from Macenas Golf, a coastal golf resort and complex of luxury properties. Macenas beach
Comes to an end at Castillo de Macenas where the coastline becomes much craggier, here there is an area of rocky plinths which serves as a popular base for sea fishing. The Macenas tower is one of two ancient defense towers situated on the headland, the second being Torre del Perulico. To reach both of the towers, the Macenas beach bar and ultimately Playa el Sombrerico, the next beach destination, leave the ALP-118 at the third roundabout following the signpost for the towers. The tarmac road ends at Castillo de Macenas, the trail however continues, albeit now a gravel track, Perulico tower and viewing point along the Mojacar coastline and advances in spite of the rocky terrain to the viewing point of the El Perulico tower. Steps and handrails ease the steep ascent to the tower and the tip of the rocky peak, the amazing seascapes seen from this spot are most certainly well worth the effort.

Playa el Sombrerico
An isolated sandy beach in a truly beautiful setting. Better known that one would anticipate, it is documented that the area was used for location sets in the famous Orson Wells film Treasure Island. Furthermore, tucked away among the greenery of the hillside, there is a solitary beach bar, Chiringuito Manaca, it was built from one of the Treasure Island film sets and now provides an ideal setting for refreshments after a hard day at the beach. Playa el Sombrerico, like many secluded beaches in Almeria, is a naturist beach, and while many choose to wear bathing suits it is perfectly acceptable to find fellow bathers naked.

An alternative nudist beach and another unseen hideaway, a little further down the coast, is Playa Granatilla, access is from the ALP-118 Mojacar to Carboneras road, via Rambla Granatilla, which is signposted from the village of Sopalmo. The Rambla Granatilla route, which follows the course of the normally dry river bed, is popular with walkers and cyclists; it can also be accomplished by vehicle, though it is not advisable to take this route if it is raining or if a storm is threatening.
