Skellig Michael is a remote, rocky island situated in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of County Kerry in Ireland. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Famous for its remarkably preserved early Christian monastery and for being the filming location for two Star Wars movies, the island attracts pilgrims and film fans from all over the world. On the summit of this awe-inspiring rock off the Kerry coast is St Fionan’s monastery, one of the earliest foundations in the country. The monks who lived there prayed and slept in beehive-shaped huts made of stone, many of which remain to this day. Travelers can visit this site from County Kerry.
