Occupying a strategic geographical position, Rijeka is a city of intensive development. It is a multinational and multicultural centre, in which tolerance, understanding and coexistence have a special value. Rijeka hosts the Croatian National Theatre "Ivan pl. Zajc", first built in 1765, as well as the University of Rijeka, founded in 1632. Some of the most important sights of the city are: the Square of the Republic of Croatia, the Korzo, a City Tower, Old Gate - the oldest architectural monument in Rijeka, the Church of the Assumption.
