Located on the shore of Lake Oulujarvi, Kajaani is a charming town with a pleasant rural atmosphere. The most notable tourist sights are: the old wooden houses in the town's centre, the Kajaani Art Museum and the ruins of the Kajaani castle. Other attractions include the railway station, which represents a traditional carpenter style, the Wall of Tears, which was built to aid people during the period of Great Depression, and the War Veteran Statue that is situated in Sampo Park. Vimpelinvaara is a popular sports and outdoor recreation area. Rehja Island is known for its peaceful location in the middle of Lake Nuasjarvi where you can spend warm summer days. In the wintertime, there are good skiing opportunities in the surrounding area and the town features a popular jazz festival every spring.
