Following is our suggested itinerary, please note that you may extend the number of nights in each city:
Day 1: Barcelona
Start in Barcelona, one of the most dynamic and exciting cities on the western Mediterranean seaboard. Walk its narrow streets and wonderful plazas and discover its magic: stalls full of books, birds and flowers. Explore its new modern squares, designed by leading artists such as Miró and Barceló and every visitor will understand how Barcelona has been transformed into one of the most moderns and active cities in Europe.
(Barcelona to Zaragoza ? 194 miles ? 3 hours)
Day 2: Zaragoza
2,000 years of history. You will find a stunning legacy of monuments in the streets of the city, vestiges of the Roman, Moorish, Jewish and Christian communities who left their mark on the place: Roman ruins such as the Circus; Aljafería Palace; Mudejar-style churches, with the UNESCO World Heritage designation; Baroque gems like the Pilar Basilica; the work of brilliant artist Francisco de Goya. It is one of the greatest centers of the Marian cult in Spain. A monumental city of wide avenues and arcades, Zaragoza is also a lively student center.
(Zaragoza to Argomaniz ? 166 miles ? 2 hours and 30 minutes)
Day 3: Argomaniz
Nobility Cast in Stone
Hidden away in the town of Argómaniz, the Parador is housed in a Renaissance palace that dominates the entire plain of Álava, the Gorbea Mountains and the Ullibarri Gamboa reservoir. Its proximity to the cities of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao make visiting the Artium and Guggenheim Contemporary Art Museums a must. Just 10 miles away, Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Basque capital reveals a medieval quarter where it is possible to find the most charming little corners, gardens and tree-lined boulevards, which make the capital of Alava a remarkable green space that does not disturb the careful urban layout, where medieval streets harmoniously intermingle with Renaissance palaces and Neoclassical churches.
(Argomaniz to Limpias ? 83 miles ? 1 hour and 30 minutes)
Day 4: Limpias
An Ecological Outpost
Housed in the former summer retreat of King Alfonso XIII, the Parador is the perfect starting point for visiting ?away from the hustle and bustle of the summer season? the towns of Laredo, Castrourdiales, San Vicente de la Barquera and Santoña, known as one of the "four seaside villages". It is a great tourist destination. One of the biggest and most beautiful beaches in the country - La Salvé Beach - is there. Also not to be missed are Cabárceno National Park and the Asón Valley, both ideal places for walkers and cavers alike.
(Limpias to Santillana del Mar ? 44 miles ? 50 minutes)
Day 5: Santillana del Mar
Medieval place
Situated on the northern route of the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela, Santillana del Mar is a beautiful medieval town which was developed around the collegiate church of Santa María. Its various defense towers and Renaissance palaces make Santillana one of the most important historical areas of Cantabria. However, this Cantabrian town houses its greatest treasure on the outskirts: the Altamira caves, known as the ?Sistine Chapel of the Paleolithic Age? and declared World Heritage. Santillana del Mar is a true treasure for travelers. Its streets, palaces and large homes, the Collegiate Church of Sta. Juliana, and museums such as the Regina Coello Religious Art Museum all wait to be discovered. Other interesting possibilities which lie along your route toward Asturias are El Sobrao Cave and towns such as San Vicente de la Barquera. The Parador is located in the heart of one of the best preserved medieval towns in Spain.
(Santillana del Mar to Cangas de Onis ? 70 miles ? 1 hour and 30 minutes)
Day 6: Cangas de Onis
Green Treasure
Asturias offers a 180 mile long string of interesting beaches and secluded coves. This is the part of Spain that was least touched by the Moorish occupation. It has a thousand fascinating nooks and crannies to enchant every visitor - like the fantasy summer home "El Capricho" in Comillas - designed by the genius Gaudi. In the town of Cangas de Onis be sure to visit the Roman Bridge dating back to 3,000 BC; Santa Cruz Chapel and Cortés Palace. Near Picos de Europa National Park you can visit Casa Dago (visitor?s center for the Picos de Europa Nature Reserve). The Royal Residence of Covadonga is another of the area?s highlights, along with the nearby Covadonga Lakes (Enol and Ercina), and the route of the Cares River.
(Cangas de Onis to Ribadeo ? 135 miles ? 2 hours and 30 minutes)
Day 7: Ribadeo
A taste of the sea
This Galician seaside town lies on the border between Galicia and Asturias, an opportunity to discover places of great beauty, including various beaches, especially Catedrales Beach and along the Ria of Ribadeo; San Damián Fort, Do Santos Bridge and the nearby town of Castropol. The Parador is housed in a Galician farmhouse on the estuary at Ribadeo, its location allows guests to see the views across the Ribadeo Estuary to the Asturian villages nestling on the opposite.
Day 8: Santiago de Compostela
Santiago is a World Heritage City, and offers travelers any number of sites to visit: Obradoiro Square with its beautiful cathedral, the university?s square, the ruas along which you can stroll and experience the life of the city?s inhabitants, palaces and churches, and museums such as the cathedral museum, Museo del Pobo Galego. (Museum of the Galician People), or the Galician Center for Contemporary Art. The city cannot help but seduce you.
