Trip Summary
6 nights in Portofino

One of the prettiest harbors in Italy, Portofino is known as Liguria`s jewel. Its multicolored houses and stunning seaside scenery give this tiny harbor town a picture-perfect setting. Luxury villas perch on the hills of Portofino overlooking the marina where yachts and private boats bob on the water below set against the vibrantly colored dwellings of fishermen. There are very few beaches and hotels in the picture-perfect Portofino. What there are in abundance are bars, boutiques, nightclubs and fishing boats. Portofino is well known for its world-famous visitors like Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, just to name a few. Portofino is car-free but you can drive the narrow, windy road close to the village where there is a small parking lot. In summer, it`s usually very crowded, and driving and parking can be difficult.

Recommended Stay:
At least 2 nights

Must See`s:
Church of San Giorgio ( 12th Century with relics brought back by sailors after the Crusades); The Brown Castle ( a fortress in the middle of a hanging-garden); The lighthouse (on Punta del Capo); Oratorio della Confraternita dell`Assunta (a 12th-Century wooden statue of the Assumption of the Virgin) ; Medieval Abbey of San Fruttuoso (just a few miles inland and surrounded by lush vegetation); Teatro Perla del Tigullio of Portofino (a favorite place for artists and intellectuals); The Piazzetta, (meeting-up point for the international jet-set); The Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino (chestnut trees and olive groves plus birds).

Italy

For centuries, Italy has drawn foreign visitors, mostly for its architectural, artistic and scenic splendors. Italy can truly be all things to all people. For some the Italian experience is full of passion and excitement, urbanity, crowds and noise. For others it is a quiet rural idyll where the traditional life can be experienced. Its great cities are replete with fantastic works of art ranging from the Roman times to the Renaissance. Even then, many visitors will forego the rich attractions of culture in favor of some of the most unspoilt beaches and spectacular mountains in the world.
