Following is our suggested
itinerary, please note that you may extend the number of nights in each city,
as well as select the hotel of your choice.
Day 1: USA - Madrid
Upon arrival in Madrid after transatlantic flight from the United States, you
will be met at Madrid Barajas airport by driver with private car for transfer
to the hotel of your choice where the driver will assist in your checking in.
After that you will have the rest of the morning free. Afternoon at leisure
for optional sightseeing tours. Overnight stay.
Day 2: Madrid - Cordoba
After breakfast, pick up your rent a car and depart for Andalucia by way of
the plains of La Mancha. Arrive in Cordoba and spend the afternoon visiting
this beautiful Andalucian city, World Heritage site since 1994. Wander through
the Jewish Quarter with streets, squares and patios which transport you back
to the Tenth Century, when Cordoba was the largest city in the world with over
a million in population. Today it is under 300,000. Do not miss the Mezquita,
with over 850 columns of granite and marble, which appear as a forest. Overnight
Day 3: Cordoba -
Carmona - Seville
Breakfast. Continue to Seville, by way of Carmona. A typical andalucian town
nestled in a hill. Its historical center is a mixed of Palaces, Churches and
Convents from the XV to XVIII centuries. Enjoy a cup of coffee at the Parador
that was the Castle of Pedro the Cruel and enjoy the history before continuing
to Seville. Overnight in Seville.
Day 4: Seville
Breakfast. Spend today discovering this beautiful city, capital of Andalucia.
Once again, you need to wander the city and admire its beauty. Be sure to visit
the Giralda, ancient lookout of the mezquita that existed there. If you have
the energy, walk up to the highest part and observe the wonderful view. Then
continue for a visit to the Cathedral, the largest in Spain, a gothic jewel.
Then enter into the Alcazar and feel the tranquility once you pass through its
walls. It has majestic rooms and an oasis of peace in its gardens. From there
continue for a walk around the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the old Jewish Quarter;
a labyrinth of narrow streets that represent the purest and most romantic area
of Seville. Return in the evening and sit on a sidewalk café to enjoy
the ?Noche Sevillana?. And do not miss the Plaza de España
with a canal and boat rides and 52 ceramic benches that represent all the provinces
of Spain.
Day 5: Seville -
Arcos - Ronda - Granada
Breakfast. Depart for a day filled with beautiful scenery and unique little
villages. The first stop will be Arcos de la Frontera, for many the loveliest
town in Andalucia. The old town, officially declared to be of historic and artistic
interest, is perched on top of a very high ridge, overlooking silently winding
Guadalete River. Narrow, torturous and steep streets, flowers in every corner,
it is a very hard place to describe, better to experience it! Arcos is the archetype
of the ?white villages? of the area. From Arcos to Ronda you will
follow its route, named after the color of the lime that covers the houses.
Little villages constructed on hills as a defense because these towns where
in the border between the Christian and Arab kingdoms during 3 centuries. Continue
to Granada and overnight.
Day 6: Granada
Breakfast. First thing this morning depart for a visit to the Alhambra, the
most incredible Arabian palace in the world. A complete work of sensuality characterized
by the magical usage of space, light and water. The Caliphs that built it gave
body to their idea of an earthly paradise. Be sure to walk though the Generalife
Gardens next door. They were built as a summer place, designed to deal with
the heat of the summer. In the afternoon, head for the ?New City? (built after 1492) and visit the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel where the Catholic
Kings are buried. Continue for a visit to Albayzin, the old and very well preserved
Arab quarters with narrow, steep streets, white houses, beautiful palaces and
small squares where you can sit and watch the world go by. Be sure to experience
the sunset from the San Nicolas Balcony and experience how the sun slowly changed
the colors of the Alhambra, going from a brilliant orange to an intense red
and finally into darkness and at that point, it becomes illuminated. An unforgettable
experience!
Day 7: Granada -
Windmills of Don Quijote - Toledo
Early this morning, depart for the region of La Mancha, the stage for one of
the most fantastic stories of world literature: Don Quijote de la Mancha. A
135 kms before Madrid, you will leave the N-IV in Madridejos and head for Toledo
(CM400). Be sure to stop at Consuegra where you will be able to observe one
of the most fantastic views of the windmills that inspired Cervantes to write
the chapter where Don Quijote battles the windmills mistaking them for giants.
Upon arrival in Toledo, check into your hotel and begin your visit of one of
the most beautiful and best-preserved cities in Spain. During the Middle Ages,
all 3 cultures of Spain (Christians, Jews and Moslems) lived here in peace and
it was during this time that some of its most emblematic monuments were built:
The Cathedral, a jewel of Gothic art; The Santa Maria La Blanca Sinagogue, and
the Mezquita to the Cristo de la Luz among others. In the afternoon, most tourists
return to Madrid and the city recovers its authentic atmosphere. This is the
best time to wander around Toledo. The dim streetlights surround the area in
peace and tranquility and help you picture the city as it was in medieval times.
Day 8: Toledo - Madrid
(Barajas Airport)
Enjoy breakfast and depart for the Barajas Airport (85kms, 90 minutes) for your
flight home. Be sure to allow yourself enough time to return the car.
