it was founded in 206 BC as a place of retirement for the veterans who defeated
Hannibal. By the second century AD it had grown in population to 10,000 and
stood among the most important towns in Spain. Only a quarter of the sight has
been excavated so far, but there is a huge amphitheater that once seated 40,000,
a theater, two baths, a forum and a network of streets. Then continue to Merida
which preserves some of the most outstanding Roman monuments, including a colossal
theater, an amphitheater, two aquaeductus, and a bridge, not to forget about
the Museum of Roman Art with its invaluable collection. Overnight.

by Moorish town walls with great watch-towers. Additional attractions include

los Castro and Palacio del Principe. Overnight.

Heritage" by UNESCO. And on to Zamora, a beautiful medieval town with a magnificent
