Essaouira, formerly the Portuguese colony of Mogador, and a UNESCO World Heritage site is situated on Morocco's Atlantic coast, with its Old Town perched on a clifftop protected along the coast by ramparts. Essaouira thrived in the 18th and 19th centuries, when it became Morocco's first world-class seaport, and the sea is still important to the city's economy. The beaches are popular with all types of visitors, from sunbathers to professional surfers. Essaouira is well-known for its "hippie culture", popularized as a result of Jimi Hendrix's 1969 visit to the area. Essaouira remains one of the major fishing harbours of Morocco. Essaouira is also renowned for its kitesurfing and windsurfing, with the powerful trade wind blowing almost constantly onto the protected, almost waveless, bay.
