GRINDELWALD - GETTING AROUND
The village of Grindelwald is small and easy to get around on foot. The town does have some hilly streets, so you may want to take a taxi or the bus depending on how far you are walking. The two train stations are about 06 miles apart and separated by roughly 325 ft of vertical elevation.
By TrainGrindelwald has two train stations: Grindelwald and Grund. The Grindelwald station is in the center of town; the Grund station is in the valley floor, on the way to Kleine Scheidegg. Wengernalpbahn trains (painted yellow and green) to Kleine Scheidegg generally stop at both stations. Berner Oberland Bahn trains (in blue and yellow livery) from Interlaken via Zweilütschinen stop only at Grindelwald. If you plan to walk between these stations, be aware that the two stations are about .6 miles apart, and separated by roughly 325 ft of vertical elevation.
By BusA local bus service can get you to nearby destinations.
By GondolaThe gondola lift to Männlichen departs a few hundred meters west of Grund station. The gondola lift to First begins about ten minutes' walk east of Grindelwald station, while the cable car to Pfingstegg is about fifteen minutes' walk east of Grindelwald station.
By TaxiTaxi service is available from the airports to Grindelwald and major hotels in the village supply taxi services for in-town travel and to nearby destinations.
By Car
If you're renting a car while in Grindelwald, you're best off
making the arrangements before-hand through a travel agent or online
reservation service. If you're traveling to Grindelwald in the wintertime,
however, you're better off using the train instead of car rental, as the
roads in and out of Grindelwald are mountainous and nerve-wracking. The village
is the last stop before the mountains themselves, so there`s nowhere
to drive after there.
In the
summertime, road conditions are good, though still mountainous and
nerve-wracking. Train travel is still the better idea, though
car rental allows for more spontaneity. There are no car rental
agencies to be found in Grindelwald itself, but nearby Interlaken has Auto
Europe, Avis, Hertz, and others. Shop around. Be aware of local and
state taxes, airport surcharges, insurance, or other hidden charges
are tacked on without your pre-knowledge. If you`re driving there in
winter, be attentive to the weather and be sure the car is equipped
with tire chains.
