Brighton is the oldest and one of the most famous seaside resorts in the United Kingdom. Its broad shingle beach is backed by amusement arcades and Regency-era buildings. Brighton Pier, in the central waterfront section, opened in 1899 and now has rides and food kiosks. The Royal Pavilion is a palace like no other with an Indian-styled exterior and a Chinese-inspired interior. Next door to the Brighton Pier is the Victorian aquarium, Sea Life Brighton, where you can learn about the creatures of the deep and watch a shark swimming over your head in the underwater tunnel. The town is also known for its nightlife, arts scene, shopping and festivals, including one of the largest LGBT pride festivals in the country.
