Major Cities

What do Sir Walter Raleigh, T.E. Lawrence, Margaret Thatcher, and Thomas Hobbes all have in common? They all graduated from the most prestigious university in the English-speaking world, located in this beautiful town along the Thames.

The beautiful market town of Windsor is home to one of the Queen`s official residences, Windsor Castle, which was built by William the Conqueror. Just across the Thames sits the town of Eton, home to Eton College, one of the most prestigious men`s preparatory schools in the world.

Brighton is the oldest and one of the most famous seaside resorts in the United Kingdom. Its broad shingle beach is backed by amusement arcades and Regency-era buildings. Brighton Pier, in the central waterfront section, opened in 1899 and now has rides and food kiosks. The Royal Pavilion is a palace like no other with an Indian-styled exterior and a Chinese-inspired interior. The town is also known for its nightlife, arts scene, shopping and festivals.

Southampton is a city and major port situated on the southern coast of England. It may forever be associated with the luxury liner RMS Titanic, which left the port of Southampton to embark on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912. Over a century later, Southampton is still England`s -- and indeed Europe`s -- largest cruise port. The Medieval city walls, of which many portions remain, are considered the most extensive of any city in Britain.
