Cities in Dalmatia
Rijeka, Croatia`s third-largest city, is a gateway to the islands. It offers an interesting mix of gritty port and Habsburg grandeur, with charm, culture, good nightlife, intriguing festivals and Croatia`s most colorful carnival.
Opatija, 8 miles west of Rijeka, sprawls along the coast between forested hills and the sparkling Adriatic, the whole waterfront is connected by a promenade. It was the most fashionable seaside resort for the Viennese elite during the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with many beautiful belle époque villas still remaining. It offers grand spa hotels, spectacular location and agreeable year-round climate with some excellent restaurants, particularly good cluster in the pretty Volosko neighborhood.
Mali Lo?inj is a stunner: a natural harbor ringed by graceful, gently weathered Mediterranean town houses and green surrounding hills. The town straddles both coasts on the narrowest section of the island, at the apex of a long protected harbor. A string of imposing 19th-century sea captains` houses lines the seafront, and even with the summer tourist commotion, this historic quarter still retains its charm and atmosphere.
WHY DALMATIA?

Squeezed between the Istrian peninsula to the north and Dalmatia to the south, the Kvarner Gulf offers many of the Croatian coast`s highlights: grayish coastal hills and mountains, an archipelago of ochre-grey islands and fishing villages with narrow alleys and gardens groaning under the weight of subtropical plants. In the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the wealthy built holiday homes here, bestowing places like Rijeka and Opatija with a rich legacy of stately Habsburg-era architecture. From both of these neighboring towns you can easily connect to hiking trails inside the protected forests of Uèka Nature Park and Risnjak National Park. The Kvarner island of Rab boasts sandy beaches of almost Caribbean proportions, and the range of rocky and pebbly coves on offer elsewhere will have Adriatic-beach enthusiasts scouring their brains in search of superlatives.
