Adored by romantic poets as well as statesmen and royalty, the beautiful Italian lakes are stunning, with mountains that descend to meet the lakeshore and pretty lakeside towns. They are embedded with fishing villages, medieval castles, Renaissance palazzi and neoclassical villas, ancient ruins, and sumptuous gardens spilling right down the water's edge. You can find prehistoric rock carvings near Lake Iseo, Roman ruins on the Sirmione peninsula guarded by a moated medieval castle, Romanesque churches and cliffside convents.

Formed around 11,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age, the lakes were the result of glaciers thrusting down from the Alps and gouging out deep valleys. Most of the lakes enjoy sheltered microclimates that make them warm and mild in winter, with the southern shores benefiting from winter sunshine and the northern shores shadowed by Alpine peaks. The four most important lakes are, from west to east, Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, Lake Como and Lake Garda. Between and around these are several minor lakes, such as Lake Orta, west of Maggiore, and Lake Iseo, midway between Como and Garda, as well as countless Alpine tarns trapped in the high valleys. The region offers classic images of Italy - balconies over blue water, sleepy cobblestone villages and stone cottages, secluded gardens and exotic flora.
