WHY ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF MYSTRAS?

The "wonder of the Morea", the unique Archaeological Site of Mystras, was built as an amphitheatre around the fortress erected in 1249 by the prince of Achaia, William of Villehardouin. Reconquered by the Byzantines, then occupied by the Turks and the Venetians, the city was abandoned in 1832, leaving only the breathtaking medieval ruins, standing in a beautiful landscape. Mystras constitutes a monumental late-Byzantine complex with distinct and well-preserved elements such as land-planning, street planning, secular and ecclesiastical architecture, and artistic production. As a matter of fact, its authentic urban character, which has not been affected by human interventions, has been preserved through the centuries. Please note we do not offer hotels or other activities in this city at this current time.

Tours to the Archaeological Site of Mystras are available from Athens.
